Horror Film Poster Planning

Font Planning

The font of a horror poster can make or break the atmosphere that I am aiming to create. I want the poster to reflect the terror and suspense of the teaser trailer and therefore the title must reflect these elements as it is one of the main factors that the target audience will see when they look at the poster. I have analysed each font in their effectiveness and how well they would fit in with the content of the teaser trailer.

Picture Planning

To hook the target audience, my previous film poster analysis has indicated that a photo from the film has to be used. I have collected a range of stills from the teaser trailer as well as creating a staged photo for the poster.

This is a still from the climax of the teaser trailer. It is effective because it contains some horror conventions, such as the colours, however it is too dark and it would not capture the attention of the target audience from a distance.

This is a still from about half-way through the trailer- a point where the tension is near the climax. It is visible to see the 'villain' in the picture yet the expression of the victim is unclear due to the darkness of the picture and therefore it does not convey the fear that it is supposed to. If the victim doesn't appear scared, why should the target audience want to see the film? Thus, this is not a good picture to use to advertise the film.

This is a good still from the end of trailer as the conventional derelict setting is visible plus the lighting casts shadows on to the character which makes them less visible, thus putting a sense of mystery and fear to the picture. Even though it is a good picture, I am unsure whether it would be enough on its own to capture the attention of the target audience

Last Years Media Poster

This is my horror film poster from last year which I used in the background while I conducted my opening film sequence evaluation in the form of a DVD commentary extra. I have included a credit block, production company logo, release date, age certificate, a tagline, the title of the film, the names of starring actors and a conventional horror genre image. all of these elements are found in a film poster, however this year I do not need to include a credit block or an exact release date because it is a teaser poster.

Learning from this poster and others I have analysed, I need to make the coulour scheme alot darker and use better images to convey more of the horror genre. The title font needs to fit more with the horror genre. For example, eroded text is often used in film posters of the horror genre.
